Breaking News:Gambia:Let’s Build a Stronger Image for The Gambia -Says President Jammeh

The Gambian leader, President Yahya Jammeh, has urged all Gambians including those in the Diaspora to join hands in building a stronger image of the country, which would earn the respect of others, now that the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) is on satellite and can be viewed and heard across the globe.

In a statement read on his behalf by Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy, Vice President and Secretary of State for Women's Affairs at the inauguration ceremony of the GRTS satellite project on Monday, President Jammeh said his passion in this crucial project lies not only in immeasurable and diverse opportunities it provides to The Gambia in its drive to be reckoned with among the comity of nations, but also in the opportunities it provides for Gambians in the Diaspora and non-Gambians alike to get direct access to accurate information on The Gambia.

He added that it would also afford the country the opportunity to market its huge business potentials including attractions that can lead to favourable investment undertakings by foreign investors in the economy.

"With GRTS going satellite, news, information, and other facts about the country, the people, our culture, and heritage, would now be accessed by all internationally regardless of where one is located," he said.

"In launching this project therefore, I wish to urge all Gambians including those in the Diaspora to join hands in building a stronger image of the country, which would earn the respect of others," he expressed.

President Jammeh declared that his government would leave no stone unturned to explore opportunities

for consolidating the advantage of the information and information technologies. He added that the launching of this multimillion-dollar satellite project for GRTS, is a solid fulfilment of his administration's aspiration to enhance the quality of broadcasting at the GRTS.

He posited that by becoming more positively exposed internationally, there no longer would be space for detractors and unscrupulous elements that do all it takes to spread false and potentially damaging stories about the country.

"The fact that we are now on satellite broadcasting, most of these stories would be demystified and corrected," he said.

Equally, President Jammeh urged the GRTS management and staff to take special care of the facilities and infrastructure by ensuring that they are well kept and maintained in the interest of sustainability.

He also called for more training of staff to operate the system and to explore new frontiers of co-operation, especially in the areas of product branding and the production of quality programmes and products that are of the highest international merit. The project is said to cost about US$9.5 million.

Speaking earlier, Momodou Sanyang, Director General GRTS, who has no doubt that GRTS now has the most advanced studio in the West African region, said the satellite project is giant step in the country's pursuit for growth and wider acknowledgement.

A happy and cheerful Sanyang thanked President Jammeh for the continual support he had been rendering to GRTS and acquisition of satellite for The Gambia.

He also thanked all the institution that had helped his institution and singled-out Mr. Momodou Turo Darboe as an individual who he said repainted the whole complex and also provided fire extinguishers for the edifice.

Alhagie Sering Faye, who gave the vote thanks said GRTS was once referred to as Radio Kombo because their signals were limited to Kombo's, but now with the launch of this broadcast satellite, that would send both radio and television signals across the globe, GTRS could be heard and viewed throughout Africa, Europe, the Middle East and most part of the America, the United States and Canada.

Breaking News:Gambia:‘Dialogue with the people tour’, a resounding success - Waa Juwara

Thursday, May 28, 2009
The leader of the National Democratic Action Movement (NDAM), Lamin Waa Juwara, has described the recently concluded 'Dialogue with the people tour' by President Jammeh as a success.

Speaking to the Daily Observer, Juwara said the reception by the people throughout the president's countrywide tour was national in character, and it went beyond the partisan level as people from all walks of life, young and old, male and female, came out to welcome the Gambian leader and his entourage. The NDAM leader said the success of the president's tour of the country was amply manifested in all the meetings he held and reflected in the speeches delivered by the people.

Juwara, who said he was among those who went to welcome the president in Niamina, and was part of the Jareng meeting in Niamina East, hoped that during next year's 'Dialogue with the people tour,' other opposition personalities will grace the occasions. "In a nation that is reconciled with itself there will be no place for the opposition fighting the government and the government fighting the opposition. Gambian politics must be dictated by constructive engagement and I think the time has come for Africans to do away with donkey politics," he remarked.

He went on to say that his desire is for Gambia to be a pace setter where both the governing party and the opposition parties coexist peacefully. He recalled that since the political parties signed a memorandum of understanding, there had been no longer any room for personal political ambitions, something he said that could destroy the country's peace and democracy.

Juwara who strongly believes that President Jammeh has honoured the MOU signed between the ruling party and the opposition, said that the latter have been engaging in activities aimed at dragging the agreement therein, "thinking that they will make political capital out of the situation." President Jammeh's recent tour, he noted, has demonstrated that political differences have taken secondary, and that national unity has become the primary concern of the Gambian leader.

He further said there is no room for power struggle in The Gambia, noting that the Gambian people are quite aware of the importance of politics of development, as has been the repeated call by the president throughout his tour. He pointed to the fact that the rural communities are enjoying pipe-borne water and electricity supply, "which had been a distant dream for them." The rural electrification programme, he stressed, is already a reality as there are many other projects either completed or being constructed. And also the road networks in the Kombo Coastal Area and in both the North and South Banks of the country are in progress.

In education, he said, apart from the fact the country can now boast of a university, it is also reassuring to note that there are lower and upper basic schools  all across the country. "Information is within the reach of every Gambian, GRTS has gone on satellite and President Jammeh's statement that all hands must be on deck and that every Gambian has a role in the development of the country is clear manifestation of his commitment and love for the country," he said.

Juwara added that among the most important achievements of this government is the restructuring of the Department of Agriculture to tackle "the politics of the belly" and provide food security in The Gambia.

Gambia:Agriculture In focus:The benefits of rearing rabbits in The Gambia

Thursday, May 21, 2009
The purpose of this article is to sensitise the public especially, focusing on the young people in learning institutions by informing, educating and inspiring them to take up rabbit rearing projects as part of livestock production in their agricultural development programme.

This intervention is relevant to the needs of the country and is in line with the overall objectives of national food production, which aims at providing food for The Gambian population and to create self-employment.

The content of this article will therefore focus on the following:
• Introduction
• Aims and objectives of rabbit rearing in The Gambia
• Rabbit rearing project for teachers in training at The Gambia College
• An appeal to the public especially the young people to support agriculture in The Gambia for self-sufficiency in food production

To introduce the topic, our national policy in animal husbandry should be positive and relevant to the needs of all Gambians especially the young who are our future leaders and farmers. Such projects for Gambians are indispensable in the socio-economic development of the country and can benefit hardworking rural women farmers who own the majority of small domestic animals in the country. In fact, Gambian women are good at managing small animals for meat production, for home consumption and for sale.  Rabbit rearing, when managed properly, can be a viable project for both young people and our adult rural farmers.

The production of rabbit meat locally as a source of protein  can help maintain household food security and minimise the importation of foreign meat coming into the country.  To compliment government's efforts, schools and training institutions should set priorities in the acquisition of knowledge and skills in the rearing of rabbits as they are easy to manage and can provide meat to support school meals and generate income for the school for the sale of live rabbits and meat, thus reducing poverty.

In the light of this, it is easy to understand that our young people when they leave school cannot all have white-coloured jobs.  Lack of self-employment  coupled with negative attitudes make our youths move from the rural to urban areas seeking lucrative jobs in the urban areas or trying to chase their dreams by travelling by boat to Europe only to die in the high seas.  The eyes and minds of the public should therefore be drawn to the advantages and opportunities that rabbit rearing projects can offer i.e a better life for people in the community.

Aims and objectives of the project by the establishment of the rabbit-rearing project, coupled with proper planning implementation and evaluation, the project will be able to achieve the following:

• To improve the nutritional status and income generating capacity of the people
• To acquire knowledge and skills in rabbit rearing for schools and the entire community
• Teachers- in training to disseminate the knowledge and skills learnt for the benefit of the youth and the entire nation.
• To serve as a project model for young people and adults to emulate.
• To minimise all forms of social evils faced by Gambian youths such as illicit drug use and trafficking etc.
• To fight against poverty at the grass root by the provision of food and income generation to the community.

The importance of this project is manifested by the significant contribution of meat it can supply to the community, which is needed to keep people healthy. The project can also provide remunerative incentives for farmers interested in livestock production.
Many local breeds of rabbits can be found in The Gambia but rabbits such as the New Zealand white and a few California breeds which for years, have been adapted to tropical climate  have been reared in California, Europe and many tropical countries like The Gambia.  The California breed has a white body and black markings on the nose, ears, feet, and tail.  The adult rabbit weighs between 3.6 to 4.5 kilogrammes.  The New Zealand breed is completely white in colour.

The adult male buck weighs between 4 – 5 kilogrammes and the female breed has a low food to meat conversion.  They are herbivorous mammals, which have been domesticated, although some are still in the wild.  Some people keep them as pets for their children.  They are usually reared in-groups or singly, in hutches or cages, for the supply of meat, skins and manure for the school gardens and farmers and can serve as laboratory teaching science material in schools.

The rabbit has a different digestive system from the ruminant cow.  (The cow is a four part stomached animal).  They have only one stomach to digest their food; therefore a balance food ration should be provided for these intensively housed animals.
A flock of rabbits living together is known as a colony.  The colony size may be up to 200 rabbits or more.  Smaller colonies 20 – 40 rabbits are easier to manage.  In a mixed colony rabbits mate within a week in a proportion of about 15 does to 1 buck.  Twenty-eight days after the colony is made up, the does should be removed and put in individual hutches where they give birth to their litters.

Rabbits can be fed from various green plants of 46 grammes of rabbit ration for each adult rabbit.  A guide to the nutritional requirements of the ration are protein 12 – 15%, crude fibre 20 – 27%, fat 20 – 35%, carbohydrates 43 – 48% and minerals 5 – 6.5% making a total of 100% of balanced ration more can be given to pregnant and suckling does.

Rabbits can stand a temperature range of between 5 and 21oC equivalent to 40 and 70oF.  Rabbit hutches are usually placed outdoors or sometime shelters are constructed to protect the rabbits from harmful creatures and adverse weather conditions.  They gnaw wooden material and therefore it is advisable to use metal cages when it is available. The hutches should be provided with adequate clean food and water. The troughs in the hutches should be designed to prevent spillage of water and food. If available, small water bottles are suspended upside down to supply water to the rabbits.  Water containers are replaced or refilled regularly for continuous supply of water.  Rabbits usually eat leaves of plants, cereal grains, stale bread and small-scale rations containing reasonable levels of fish to meet their energy requirements. Information on additional rabbit rations for schools can be obtained from the livestock production unit of the department of agricultural services.

The Gambia college teachers rabbit project 1995 –98
In collaboration with the department of livestock services, the author of these essay  who was then senior agricultural science education lecturer and acting head of the science department in The Gambia College, undertook the management of a rabbit rearing project among many other school agriculture projects.  Realising the scarcity and high prices of meat in The Gambia, he supervised the teachers-in training in the planning and implementation of the project in order to contribute to the country's aims and objective of self-sufficiency in food production.

The teachers-in-training were made to adhere to the guidelines for housing the rabbits in the college.  The does and third litter were allowed to have 2.5m2 floor space in their hatches.  The doe and buck 1.2m2 floor space.  For the breeding cage the doe and buck 1.9m2.  The nest box for the pregnant doe 45cm2-floor space and its pop hole 22cm2 and 100cm from the floor.

The teachers-in-training therefore constructed rabbit hatches and nest boxes for the intensive housing of rabbits behind the College Science laboratory based on the guidelines already mentioned. The low cost rabbit hatches were made up of wooden frames with wire netting material, wire floors to remove rabbit faeces for use in the school farms as fertiliser.  The legs of the rabbit hatches are  put in cups to protect the rabbits from ants and other crawling or creeping creatures upsetting them.

By the time the author left Gambia College, the rabbits had started to mate, produced young rabbits, which were managed to adulthood, and the students- in training benefited nutritionally and financially. An appeal from His Excellency the President, Professor Dr. Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh, a visionary leader, was made to the public especially to young Gambians to support agricultural production for food self-sufficiency in the country.  This appeal was made during the two-day visit of the Vice-Prime Minister of Spain, Her Excellency Dona Maria Teresa Fernandez to the country.  Parents and teachers should therefore support the President's appeal by motivating the young people to appreciate and support agricultural food production in order to feed The Gambian population and to minimise the importation of agricultural food coming into the country.  This appeal is a step in the right direction.

The Gambia has not only a committed farmer President but also a promoter of women empowerment.  This project of rabbit rearing can be taken by the women to supplement government efforts and the good intentions that the president has for the women.  The women and young people can easily and conveniently become meat vendors for the economic development and welfare of their families.  Commitment is action for a better life.  Let us involve the young because what they do in their early age affects them when they grow to adulthood.

Breaking News:Gambia:GRTS goes on satellite!!!

The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, yesterday evening presided over the launching ceremony of a 9.5 million US Dollar project that saw the national broadcaster, The Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) go on satellite.

The ceremony was held at GRTS' head office along MDI Road, Kanifing. In a statement read on behalf of President Jammeh, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, vice president and secretary of state for Women's Affairs, expressed delight and thanks to the Almighty Allah for making this project possible, describing it as an important milestone project in the journey to develop The Gambia. "The digitalisation of GRTS and the introduction of satellite broadcasting has always been my personal ambition which has finally come to fruition today. My passion in this project lies not only in the immeasurable and diverse opportunities it provides to The Gambia in its drive to be reckoned with among the comity of nations, but also in the opportunities it provides for Gambians in the diaspora and non-Gambians alike to get direct access to accurate information on The Gambia," President Jammeh noted.

With GRTS going on satellite, he added, news, information and other facts about the country, the people, our culture, and heritages would now be accessed by all internationally, regardless of where one is located. "The launch of this multi-million-dollar satellite project for GRTS today, utilising state of the earth equipment which is second to none in africa, is a solid fulfillment of my government's aspiration to enhance the quality of broadcasting at the GRTS," the Gambian leader stated. For many people, he went on, such projects are considered ideal and possible only for the rich and more powerful economies. Bigger and more robust economies have not been able to achieve digitalisation even though their national TVs have been in existence longer than GRTS which came into being in December 1995."

President Jammeh spoke at length on the potentials of satellite broadcasting and the opportunities it would offer The Gambia. He further observed that the signals from the satellite that would be received throughout Africa, Europe, the Middle East and most parts of the Americas, will place The Gambia on the international super-highway for enhanced news and information broadcasting. "By becoming more positively exposed internationally, there no longer would be space for detractors and unscrupulous elements that do all it takes to spread false and potentially damaging stories about The Gambia. The fact that we are now on satellite broadcasting, most of these stories would be demystified and corrected. In launching the project therefore, I wish to urge all Gambians including those in the Diaspora to join hands in building a stronger image of the country which would earn the respect of others", President Jammeh remarked.

He assured Gambians that his government will leave no stone unturned to explore opportunities to consolidate the gains of the information and information technologies. "For GRTS, the sky will continue to be the limit. The next phase of the project which is currently on-going will complete the switch-over process from the current analogue to the new and advanced digitalised broadcasting technology and expanding this to the terrestrial transmission network," Professor Jammeh revealed.

He thanked Loum Jagne of RSI, the contractor of the multi-million-dollar satellite project, the staff of GRTS and the Department of State for Communication, Information and Information Technology, for a job well done. President Jammeh finally urged the management and staff of the national broadcaster to take special care of the facilities and infrastructure by ensuring that they are well kept and maintained in the interest of sustainability. Speaking earlier, Alhagie Cham, permanent secretary at the Department of State for Communication, Information and Information Technology, said his department and GRTS have worked together with the support from the Office of the President to make this project a reality.

For his part, Momodou Sanyang, director general of GRTS, thanked the Almighty Allah for making this historic day possible. He revealed that it was through the support of President Jammeh that the satellite project was made possible. Director General Sanyang described the satellite project as a giant step ahead, which requires hardwork, good vision as well as installation of sound programmes. Sanyang further said that GRTS has the most advanced studio in West Africa. He commended President Jammeh for the support he rendered to GRTS and for setting records by providing satellite for The Gambia. DG Sanyang finally thanked RSI, the contractor of the satellite project and all the staff of GRTS and DoSCIIT for a job well done.

Loum Jagne, Chief Executive Officer of RSI, also thanked President Jammeh for the honour and privilege given to them to finish the project in a short period.  Serign Faye, manager, Radio Programmes at GRTS, delivered the vote of thanks. President Jammeh was later taken on a conducted tour of the GRTS building. The ceremony was attended by Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, vice president and secretary of state for Women's Affairs, Hon Fatoumata Jahumpa-Ceesay, speaker of the National Assembly, secretaries of state, dignitaries, among others.

Breaking News:Gambia:President Jammeh honoured with Islamic title ‘Sheikh’!!!

Earlier in the evening of last Friday, President Jammeh was conferred with the Islamic title of 'Sheikh', meaning an Islamic head, during a meeting at the Serekunda West Park, by The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council in collaboration with the Kanifing Municipal Council.

This title, which adds up to his previous ones, comes out of recognition for his immense support and contribution towards the promotion of the Islamic Religion. At this meeting, the president reiterated his call for concerted effort in the national development crusade, as he addressed thousands of Gambians. Urging hard work and unreserved commitment towards the country's socio-economic advancement, the Gambian leader, called on Gambians to take up their responsibilities more effectively in the interest of the development of the nation.

He implored on Gambians to nurture unity and love among themselves. "For The Gambia to go forward and develop more than it is," the president said, "we must unite and have the belief that it is only Allah the Almighty who can give us the help we need; it is Him alone who can also deny us help." He noted that he will never subdue himself to Western influence, nor will he put his hope on that part of the world for the fulfillment of his development target.

The Gambian leader further told the people of the Kanifing municipality that they must not pin all their hope on the central government as it cannot do everything for the people. The central government, he stressed, can only pave the way for development. President Jammeh also announced at the gathering his government's uncompromising stance in dealing with anyone or any organisation that tries to import religious practices into the country which are different from the ones being practiced by the people. The organisation of 'Ziarehs' in anticipation of enriching oneself, he stressed, totally contradicts the principles and teachings of the religion of Islam. The president also made reference to 'Ziarehs' that are organised in the name of Sheikh Omar Futiyou at the Gunjur river side as example of such unacceptable practices.

He tasked the Supreme Islamic Council to take immediate action against such people who bring religious confusions in the country among worshippers, warning the national broadcaster (GRTS) and other radio stations in the country against hosting programmes which offer opportunities for such people to highlight issues of this nature. Secretary of state Yankuba Touray called on the people of the area to be steadfast in the development processes of the country. He called on the people of the area to stop erecting their buildings at the road side, saying whenever government needs to embark on development projects such as road construction, such buildings are bound to be demolished.

Secretary of state Touray then implored on the young people to be more hard working and also to make the maximum use of the facilities available for them. At the same gathering, The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) also presented a paper of appreciation to The Gambian leader, as a demonstration of their recognition of his visionary leadership and the valuable support he has been rendering the sporting fraternity in the country.

BREAKING NEWS:GAMBIA:Female Genital Multilation:FGM: A Very Good Islamic Practice - Sheikh Seedia Ceesay!!!

Sheikh Seedia Ceesay, a noted Islamic scholar, who is the Deputy Imam of the State House Mosque has said that scholars of 'Hambaly' termed Female Circumcision as a very good practice and in fact a major one.

Sheikh Seedia Ceesay who is also the assistant principal of the Talinding Islamic Institute under Gambia Islamic Union made these remarks last Friday during his sermons at the State House Mosque. He said that the Holy Prophet (SAW) used it as way of describing as and when purification is compulsory.
According to Sheikh Ceesay, Prophet (SAW) did not use one circumcised part to describe it but rather the two i.e. male and female and asserted that husband should force his wife to be circumcised equally as he used to force her to pray.

He said the history of the practice as to when it actually started and is not precisely known. He added that yet it is clear that it was generally practiced in all nations in the world. He said some scholars stated that the practice started as far back as the generation of Adam the father of human race. He said the practice was however abandoned by his children as time went on after him. Then the practice was revived by the father of Prophet, Ibraham by Allah's order. The Holy Prophet (SAW) said that circumcision is a Sunnah for male and a honour or generosity for female i.e. adding that many scholars who says that circumcision is compulsory includes, Ash-shafae, Ahmad, Hambal, Ata a, Al-Awzae, Shanoon Minal Malikia and Ibn Abbas a well known sahaba i.e. a companion of the Holy Prophet (SAW).
According to Sheikh Ceesay FGM practice on females is an honour and therefore cannot be rejected by any pure Muslims and it is only so-call Muslims who will reject it for their own financial needs.

"Scholars of the World all agreed that female circumcision is a Sunnah and an honour, generosity, respect and a measure of control of their sexual desire for men," Sheikh Ceesay expressed.

He maintained that FGM has been going on long ago and no harm has ever been attributed to it and cautioned that why then is it possible now when we claimed yet to be in high science and technology and therefore attributing harms to it which has never happened before.

He said five things are fitrah in hadith which means Sunnah narrated by Bukhari and Muslims namely, circumcision, shaving of genetically parts, shaving of mustache, cutting of nails and shaving of hair of the armpits.

Sheikh Ceesay revealed that Umul Atiya (MPBWH) a female circumciser during the time of the prophet (SAW) was advised to cut a small part of it and not all because it makes the wife beautiful and makes the husband happy about the wife therefore if female are circumcised it will go a long way in preventing adultery and prostitution in our Islamic society.

"If FGM is not permitted in Islam, prophet (SAW) would have condemned it straight as he did in the case of polytheism because he never compromised in religion and never talk on his own desire by the testimony of the Quran and that he never kept quite on harmful things that will be burden to Islam or human race at large," he said.

He quoted Ibn Abbas who reported to have said that "there is no valid Hajj or prayers for uncircumcised males and female".

He also said that Imam Malik says that uncircumcised persons should not lead prayers nor testify or witness court cases and animals slaughtered by such persons should not be eaten by Muslims.

"Finally, I am appealing to all good Muslims to hold fast to their religion, Islam, in good and faithful manner and keep away from those enemies to it," he said.

BREAKING NEWS:GAMBIA:CULMINATION OF THE PRESIDENTIAL TOUR!!!

The Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, yesterday returned to Banjul after 10days crisscrossing the country, as part of his 'Dialogue with the people tour'.

Days of preparation in anticipation of the president, clearly the people's president, resulted in a tumultuous welcome for him. From Brikama in the Western Region, KMC, right to Banjul, there were extraordinary scenes with tens of thousands of people lining the streets, and thousands more accompanying him all the way to the State House.

For a great many people in the Greater Banjul Areas, 10 days absence of the Gambian leader had been months, and an understanding President Jammeh appeared well aware of this, all the while reciprocating the people's gesture of support with constant waving and smiling, all the while throwing biscuits as a way of maintaining some kind of friendly contact between president and people.

President Jammeh's return to Banjul does not mark the end of his 2009 'Dialogue with the people tour' as he is set to continue on it with the people of the Western Region, KMC and finally Banjul. When the presidential delegation departed Kanilai, where the Gambian leader spent two nights, it headed for Mandinaba where he was to inspect the just completed Mandinaba-Seleti Road project. By 4pm, the delegation was been escorted by the people of the Western Region, led by Governor Lamin Sanneh.

The people of the Kanifing municipality, headed by Mayor Yankuba Colley, received the presidential convey in Lamin Village, accompanying it through Tabokoto, Tallinding, Westfiled, up to the Denton Bridge, where Banjulians, led by Mayor Samba Faal, where all set to receive them.

As the delegation approached Banjul, the procession became all the more slower, with top Gambian artists like Jaliba Kuyateh, Sedhiou Band, Army Band, Musa Afia Ngum, the Senegal based Gambian Mbalax star, Magnificent Joe, among many others, filling the air with melodious songs full of thanks and praises for the Gambian leader, laying emphasis on his development and heroic stance. It took the presidential convoy about five hours from Brikama to Banjul, with every single person along this route wanting to have a glimpse of a leader they clearly adore.

This year's welcome ceremony, it has been observed, symbolises unity among all Gambians. It also shows how increasingly popular the Gambian leader has become over the past years. It has been described by many as one of the best if not the best welcoming party ever organised for the president.

Visit to Mandiba – Seleti Road
The president's 10th day engagement began by the visit to the 12.7kilometer road project which is part of the European Union (EU) funded road network project with a total investment of 3.2 million Euros. With Balast Nedam as the contracting agent, construction of the road lasted for nine months.

At the Gambia-Senegal boarder in Giboroh, President Jammeh, out of pure magnanimity, gave out the sum of D50, 000 to both the Gambian and Senegalese security personnel there. The elders of Giboroh, who had recited the Holly Qur'an in prayers for the new road, also benefited from a D50, 000 donations from the president.

The presidential tour continues tomorrow with a visit to the Wellingara Horticultural Centre, and two meetings inMarakisa and Gunjur.

Breaking News:Gambia:President Jammeh visits D10M Bwiam market project!!!

In continuation of his 'Dialogue with the people tour', the president of the Republic, His Excellency Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh yesterday, on Day 8, visited a D10M dalasis (ten millions dalasis) market project in Bwiam, Western Region.

The president himself is said to be the sponsor of the market, which is expected to accommodate about three hundred market women from the area. The market, on completion, will accommodate sixty canteens, a restaurant and a mosque. According to officials of the contracting agent, Competence Company, the market has an area of 140 by 70 meters. After completion, official statements added, the market will be entrusted to the twenty-one village associations under the Kansala Trust Fund to oversee its operations, while its management and daily running will be done by committee members of the Kansala Trust Fund.

During a brief discussion with the elders of the area, President Jammeh called on them to take ownership of the market after completion and to properly utilise it. He also warned the people of the area against allowing foreigners to come and occupy all of the market, saying: "If I come and find non-Gambians operating here, I am going to close the market." The Gambian leader also strengthened his clarion call for attitudinal change towards national development.

During the discussion, the people of the area appealed for the Gambian leader's support by providing them with fishing boats, which is of course in line with President Jammeh's call for Gambians, especially the young people, to maximally utilize the country's natural resources. He then pledged to give them one million dalasis as a starting loan for the operations of the market. Shortly before President Jammeh left Jarra Soma, where he and his entourage had a night's stop on Sunday, The Gambian leader visited the Rural Development Institute (RDI) campus in Mansakonko, where he was accorded a warm welcome by both officials and students. He also presented a cash amount of ten thousand Dalasis to the students, in addition to a promise to upgrade the infrastructure of the institute.
By Saikou Ceesay

The Gambian leader was escorted by the Lower River Region governor, Momodou Soma Jobe, and his people, to the LRR-WR border at the Burumang Bridge in Kalagi, where he was received by thousands of supporters from Western Region, including Governor Lamin Sanneh, elders, youth, women and  school children. After his visit to the Bwiam market, the Gambian leader was further escorted by thousands of APRC party militants and supporters to his native home of Kanilai, where he spent the night.

Breaking News:Gambia:Gambia Gov’t Has no Link to Ghana Killings, Says Foreign Affairs Department

According to GRTS Radio, the joint United Nations-ECOWAS Fact-finding Team set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Ghanaian nationals in 2005, has absolved the government of The Gambia of any direct or indirect complicity in the deaths.

In a report issued at the end of its fact-finding mission, the UN-ECOWAS Panel says it has found no evidence that links the government of The Gambia either directly or indirectly to the death of the eight West African nationals whose bodies were discovered in the TanjiForest around GhanaTown in 2005.
News despatched from the Foreign Affairs Department says the Panel also finds that the various reports in both the print and electronic media that link the Government of The Gambia to the deaths, lack credibility as they are all patently biased.
According to the evidence found by the Team, the 8 dead persons were victims of an illegal migration scam that was conceived and perpetrated by criminals operating in the West African sub-region.
At a meeting convened under the aegis of the UN and ECOWAS in
Abuja, Nigeria on 11th May 2009, Gambian and Ghanaian Ministers reviewed the report and jointly endorsed the findings that absolve the government of The Gambia of having any hand in the death of the 8 men. They have agreed to work on the way forward.

The Editorial:Gambia:The Rule Of Law Is Sacred-Says Gambiaaffairs Editor!!!

The Staff

When journalists are abducted or murdered with impunity, the rule of law is broken. When people are taken from their homes straight to the prisons or to unknown places, the rule of law is violated. Respect for the law is a prerequisite for social justice and peaceful coexistence in society. No society can make meaningful progress without adherence to the rule of law.

It is for this reason that we note with concern that The Gambia has, in the Gambia-EC Development Cooperation Review, dropped in the areas of the rule of law, transparency and corruption and participation and human rights. The gain the country has recorded in sustainable economic development and human development could be enhanced if there were a corresponding improvement in the fields of the rule of law and transparency. Real growth cannot be sustained where there is no transparency and the rule of law.

Here lies the challenge for the state. For the rule of law to be seen to prevail in the country, due process should and must be followed in all cases, even those that might appear to be awkward to deal with. Therefore, the state would be wise to decriminalize press offences, in addition to repealing the law that imposes stringent conditions for newspaper registration. Besides, the state should do all that it can to find the killers of Deyda Hydara and bring them to justice as well as helping to trace the whereabouts of Chief Ebrima Manneh. Both the late Deyda Hydara and Chief Ebrima Manneh who disappeared into thin air since 2004 and 2006 respectively are Gambians. When a citizen is killed in strange circumstances or appears to have been abducted, it is incumbent on the state to track down the perpetrators of such dastardly acts. If the state is seen to be helpless in protecting the lives of its citizens, then something is wrong somewhere. Indifference to such acts is a clear violation of human rights.

In this connection we would humbly like to state here that the government should do all it can in improving those areas that they fell short of.

"To no one will we sell ,to no one will we deny, or delay, right or justice".

Under cross-examination, Lamin Jarjue, the man at the centre of the predicament maintained that he is not the Alkalo of Babylon.

"No I am not the Alkalo," he said.

"Then who is the Alkalo?" asked Lawyer Mboge.

"I don't know, I am just a community leader," he answered.

"Who made you the community leader?" Lawyer Mboge further asked."

"Because I give land to the people, that's why I am called community leader," he answered.

"Lamin Jarju you have mentioned that you gave plots of land to the people; how many people did you give?" Lawyer Mboge asked.

"It's about 200 people," he said.

"What are the sizes of the plots?"

"20x20 and 25x25."

"The people you gave the land to, did they pay rates?"

"Yes they pay the local rates. I collect it and pay it to Area Council".

"Who gave you the authority?"

"I was given authority by the Area Council".

"Lamin Jarju did you have the stamp when giving land?"

"Yes, I got the stamp from my father, Bakary Jarju."

"Was he the Alkalo?"

"I don't know".

"Lamin Jarju I am finally putting it to you that you created all this problem."

"No, they caused the problem because they came to my house to attack me."

Asked whether he was dismissed from the army, he answered in the negative. He maintained that he resigned after serving 5 years.

"I am putting to you that you were arrested by one Mamina or Sheriff, a police officer, at Mandinaba with drugs," Lawyer Mboge said.

"That is not true. I don't know Mamina and I was never arrested by any police officers concerning drugs, Mr. Jarju maintained.

"Why did you leave the army?"

"I resigned."

Still under cross-examination, Lawyer Buba Bojang, prosecuting, asked Mr. Jarju whether he was ever convicted in connection with any criminal matter, he answered in the negative.

"Did anybody complain to the Area Council that you ever collected their tax and never paid it in?"

"No," he answered.

Also cross-examined by Lawyer Mboge was one Ebou Fofana.

"Who gave you the piece of land in Babylon?" Lawyer Mboge asked him.

"Lamin Jarju gave it to me."

"When he gave you the land did he stamp it?"

"Yes he did."

"Is he the Alkalo?"

"No."

"Is it true that only the Alkalo gives land to people?'

"I never know."

"Mr. Fofana you mentioned in your evidence that Lamin told you that the Kerewan and Makumbaya people are having a meeting at Dawda Jarju's compound. I am putting it to you that there was no meeting at Dawda Jarju's compound."

"Yes there was," Mr. Fofana maintained.

"You said you saw Bulli Jarju dropping something into the well and it was boiling?"

"Yes," he answered.

"I am putting it to you that it is not true?"

"Of course it is true."

"You said somebody hit you with a cutlass?"

"Yes," he answered.

"I am putting it to you that no one hit you with a cutlass," Lawyer Mboge added.

"Of course somebody hit me," he replied.

The case was at that juncture adjourned until Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
Lawyer Mboge was holding brief for Lawyer Antouman Gaye who is defending the 32 people involved in the case. The 32 are charged with arson, willful damage to property, and carrying firearms in public.

Breaking News:Gambia:Give attention to Findi cultivation!!!

At his first meeting in URR, the Gambia leader called on the people of the Upper River Region (URR) to diversify agriculture and to give attention to the cultivation of findi, a cereal crop.

Describing it as one of the best food crops that one could ever find, the president pointed out that findi has enormous health benefits. President Jammeh made this remark on Wednesday in Gambisara, URR, while addressing thousands of people as part of his 'Dialogue with the people tour'.  According to him, it is high time that people gave attention to the crop's cultivation as it is easier to cultivate compared to rice.

To this end, he reiterated his call for hard work and for Gambians to eat what they grow. He emphasised the fact that in the olden days people survived over a century with little health facilities, but that today this is not the case despite the advances in the health sector.  "For the country to move forward, we must all work hard. Let us work hard to feed ourselves. A lot of food stuff is being imported into the country which we do not even know anything about. In fact, it is advisable that human beings eat what we know," emphasised the Gambian leader, while urging the male folks of the country to work like the women to ensure that we feed ourselves. The president expressed gratitude to the Gambian women, noting that they have fulfilled the promise made to him. And he also told them that he has also fulfilled his promises to them. But President Jammeh was quick to add that Gambian women have seen nothing yet in terms of development.

In other words, there is more development to come for the women of The Gambia. Expressing his unreserved commitment to the transformation of the country into a model for others, the president pledged to extend the electricity supply in the region as part of phase two of the Rural Electrification Project.

Yankuba Touray, secretary of state for Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters, who doubles as the national mobiliser of the ruling APRC party, urged the people of URR to stop financing risky ventures like the boat journeys through the Atlantic Ocean, in desperate attempts to reach Europe.

Out of every 60 youth who die on this route, SoS Touray said, 40 are from URR. He told the gathering that President Jammeh does not wish to stop anyone from traveling to Europe, but was quick to add that anyone who wants to travel they should do so through the right way with the right documents. Touray further told the people of URR that the thousands of Gambian dalasis that the president spends in bringing back the dead bodies of Gambian youth from the deserts and high seas could have been useful in other development sectors of the country. He called on parents and anyone who sponsors their family members to go via such disastrous routes to consider that the lives of their children are more precious than money.

SoS Touray used the platform to delve on the dangers associated with illegal migration, saying that the phenomenon causes serious setbacks to the country's development efforts. He further called on the people of the region to embrace the president of the Republic and the APRC government. The government, he added, cannot do everything for the people, emphasising that the development of the country is the responsibility of all.

Also speaking at the meeting, the chief of Jimara, Haji Kulleh Camara, expressed gratitude to the Gambian leader for bringing development close to the doorsteps of the people off the region, stating that the president has done what is required of him. The Jimara chief pointed out the fact that all the health facilities in the region are currently being provided with ambulances and equipped pharmacies, thanks to the concern shown by the president.

Chief Haji Kulleh Camara described this year's groundnut trade season as successful, noting with gratitude the fact that the president has bought all the farmers' groundnut. He joined the Gambian leader in imploring the masses to till the land for food self-sufficiency.

Speaker after speaker heaped praises on the president for improving their lives through the provision of basic social amenities. Earlier on in the day, President Jammeh visited irrigated rice perimeter pump stations 2 and 3 at Sankuley Kunda. He also visited Bansang Senior Secondary School, where he donated 10,000 liters of gas oil for use with the school's generator.

The presidential tour continues tomorrow, with scheduled meetings in Basse and surrounding settlements.

Breaking News:Today is International Day of Families!!!

The Gambia will today, May 15, 2009, join the rest of the world in observing the International Day of Families.

Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in its Resolution 47/237 of 20 September 1993, this annual observance reflects the importance that the international community, The Gambia in particular, attaches to families as basic units of societies which should be safeguarded. The day will also provide an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families as the basic units of society, as well as, to devise appropriate action and to increase knowledge of the economic, cultural, social and demographic processes affecting families. It is centered on the theme "Mothers and families: A challenge in a changing world".

Below we reproduce the full statement by Dr Mariatou Jallow, secretary of state for Health and Social Welfare on the day. Today 15th May is the International Day of the Families, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 47/237 of 20 September 1993.  This annual observance reflects the importance that the international community, The Gambia in particular regards families as basic units of societies which should be safeguarded.

The day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families as the basic units of society, as well as, to promote appropriate action.  It also provides an opportunity to increase knowledge of the economic, cultural, social and demographic processes affecting families.
The 2009 observance of the day with the theme "mothers and families a challenge in a changing world" also offers a valuable opportunity for families to demonstrate their solidarity in the quest for better standards of life.

Mothers play a critical role in the family, which is a powerful force for social cohesion and integration.  The mother-child relationship is vital for the healthy development of children.  Mothers are not only caregivers; they are also breadwinners for their families.  Yet motherhood women continue to  face major and even life threatening challenges. Violence against women, many of whom are mothers, remains one of the mothers remains one of the most pervasive human rights violence of our time.  It has far-reaching consequences endangering the lives of women and girls, harming their families and communities, and damaging the very fabric of societies.  Ending and preventing violence against women should be a key priority for all community development activities.

Family structures and functions undergo constant change.  New and divergent family forms continue to evolve in different societies.  However any approach to comprehend families must, there fore, take into account the position of the family as a complex institution.  Its structures and dynamics as reflected in the relations between its member, in he distribution of responsibilities and in the characteristic of its internal economics.
However civil society should impact on the familyo ensure its empowerment along more equitable gender and age relationship.

Fellow Gambians,
The world is changing and families in all parts of the world are faced with added pressures caused by social change.  However the role for mothers remains unchanged in every stage of life.  Mothers are needed as the major source of support and comfort for development, and for social cohesion.  The need for their support does not diminish.  At times of illness, hunger, deprivation they are our source of support.
So, at each stage in our lives, mother have a vital role to play in our well being and support, yet still they are challenged with limited opportunities available to the majority of them in the area of education, reproductive health services and financial resources for their economic empowerment.
They are also increasingly affected by domestic violence, abuse, and neglect by partners.  Mothers are amongst the most vulnerable in any society and the greatest of treasures especially when they give birth to a child yet still their health is in danger due to lack of appropriate care and support by the family during pregnancy and childbirth.
Nevertheless, we probably all agree that the one feature of a family that is most telling about it is the way it cares for and supports its poorest and most vulnerable member.
In The Gambia great strides have been made in the area of maternal and reproductive health.  There has also been significant progress in boosting the income of poor households through our poverty reduction strategies and programmes both in terms of the delivery of services that improve the quality of life of families and in terms of legislative reforms.  The Gambia government through the able leadership of his Excellency The President of the Republic of The Gambia, Professor Dr, Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh is ensuring that pregnancy and child birth are safe through the provision of free maternal health care, skilled attendance at birth provision and emergency obstetric care.
We must also ensure universal access to education. The benefits of educating women and girls accrue not only to individual families but to whole countries, unlocking the potential of women to contribute to broader development efforts. Statistics also show that educated mothers are much more likely to keep their children in school, meaning that the benefits of education transcend generation.
Ending and preventing violence against women is given a key priority in our development agenda.
As we strive to support mother in their care givers works, we should develop and expand family-friendly policies and services, such as childcare centres that would reduce some of the workload placed on women..  Women and men alike need stronger public support to share equally in work and family responsibilities.  Families built on the recognition of equality between women and men will contribute to more stable and productive societies.
Finally,
We are aware that we face multiple challenges in our changing world, but one factor remains constant, the timeless importance of mothers, and their invaluable contribution to raising the next generation.
We will continue to use this occasion of the family day to intensify efforts aimed at engendering a spirit of solidarity, community citizenship, and activism in each and every family, neighbourhood, and villages
I wish you all a happy family day.

Breaking News:Gambia:New civil service policy in the offing!!!

The president of the Republic, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, has announced his government's intention to introduce a new civil service policy in the country within the next five years, which will aim at promoting the culture of posting civil servants to their native regions.

This, he told the people of Diabugu in Sandu District, is in fact already in progress, making reference to the regional governors and mayors, whom he said are all natives of the regions they are governing. This move, President Jammeh added, aims at handing over full responsibilities to the people to develop their regions.

The Gambian leader was speaking on Day 4 of his 2009 'Dialogue with the people' tour. According to him, the government has realised that the people will deliver well in their own places, which they know better that other places. "Even the security sector," he said, "will not be spared by the new policy".
More enrollment in Diabugu SSS.  At the same meeting, the Gambian leader expressed dissatisfaction over low enrollment of students at the new Diabugu Senior Secondary School in Sandu District, Upper River Region (URR).

According to him, this is a clear testimony that residents of the area are not taking their children to school, despite the fact that they had requested the construction of a senior  secondary school in their area. He added that the overall number of students in the village's upper and senior secondary schools is about 300, unlike other schools, which he observed are densely populated. He made this observation after visiting the school shortly before the start of the meeting.

President Jammeh warned that the Sarahuleh community in Sandu, especially those in Diabugu should send their children to school, otherwise his government will decide on whether or not to provide further development projects for the area. He tasked the elders of the village, among them Alhaji Musa Drammeh, to sensitise their people on the importance of education and to encourage the family heads to send their children to school.

While thanking the people of Diabugu and Sandu in general for the tumultuous welcome he and his delegation received, President Jammeh recalled that URR, especially the Sarahulehs, have supported his government since 1994. If the people of the area utilize the government-initiated projects efficiently, the president noted, he will bring more development to the area.

President Jammeh disbursed over a hundred thousand dalasis to various schools, football clubs, the URR regional scout band and Diabugu SSS scout band, all of whom lined the roads to welcome him and his delegation. Speaking earlier, Fatou Lamin Faye, secretary of state for Basic and Secondary Education, also frowned at the low enrollment record of the village's school since its establishment in 2007. Governement, she revealed, spent 33 million dalasis on the construction of Diabugu Senior Secondary School. And as such, she argued, government will have wasted its resources if the school is not utilized properly. SoS Faye therefore urged the people of the village to send their children to school, especially the girls, in an effort to complement the government's effort. She also highlighted the importance of education, especially among young girls, whom she said form part of the future leaders of the country.

She further revealed that a school feeding programme, a scholarship package and a number of other incentives have already been provided for Diabugu Senior Secondary School. She went on to appeal to community elders in the area to send their children to school so as to avoid wasting government resources. The chief of Sandu District, Sefo Jun Bah, thanked President Jammeh for his efforts in developing The Gambia especially the URR, recounting the numerous development projects the APRC government has registered in his district. Sefo Jun Bah also extended words of commendation to his people for their response to the president's back-to-the-land call.

The president's visit to their new senior secondary school apparently delighted the chief who noted with satisfaction that the school is equipped with state-of-the-art learning facilities such as a computer laboratory. He concluded his speech with an appeal to the president and his government for the provision of an electricity supply and the construction of roads in his district.

Breaking News:Sankulay Kunda Bridge foundation stone laid!!!

In a groundbreaking development in the regional administrative town of Janjanbureh in the Central River Region, the president of the Republic, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, on Wednesday morning laid the foundation stone of the US$5.5 million Janjanbureh-Sankulay Kunda Bridge.

This was done at the ferry crossing point at Sankulay Kunda. Described as historic, the laying of the foundation stone is in fulfillment of a promise made to the people of the area by the president in his untiring quest to improve the country's infrastructure, especially in the rural areas. Contracted to the Compagnie Sahelienne d'Entreprise (CSE), the entire construction the bridge is expected to last for at most 6 months.
This development has been embraced with joy by the people of the area, who have been showering words of commendation on the Gambian leader for yet another demonstration of his untiring commitment to bring development close to their doorsteps.

Evidently, expectations are already high that such a landmark development in the area will go a long way in improving the lives of the people who are predominantly poor farmers. It is also believed that the bridge, upon completion, will immensely boost economic activities in the area, as constraints in communication will be a thing of the past. Additionally, the bridge will connect Janjangbureh to CRR South, and also agricultural productivity, which the people of the area depend on for their daily upkeep, is expected to be enhanced as the farmers will no longer be faced with the problems associated with having to cross to the other end of the river by ferry or boat to farm. All these are thanks to the visionary leadership of His Excellency, the president of the Republic, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh.

Present at Wednesday's groundbreaking ceremony were the ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan, Richard Shih, and the Nigerian high commissioner to The Gambia.

No room for opposition
The people of Janjanbureh, in a separate but related meeting earlier, made a vow that there will be no opposition against President Jammeh come the 2011 presidential election. They based their argument on the fact that the developments that has been registered in the town by the Gambian leader are enough to justify calls for his continued stay at the helm of affairs of this country. This was at a meeting held last Tuesday night.

At that meeting, Honourable Foday Jibani Manka, the National Assembly member for Janjangbureh, said that since the coming of the transitional government in 1994, the APRC government, under the leadership of President Jammeh, has remained committed to the interest of the Gambian people. This, he argued, warrants a reciprocation from the people of the area, he thus called on them to embrace President Jammeh and his government, describing the party of the president as the only political party that can take The Gambia forward. "Politics," the honourable member said, "is already dead in Janjangbureh."

The chief of Janjangbureh, Bakery Jam Jawo, joined the rest in commending President Jammeh and his government on the numerous developments they have registered in the region. He called on the people of the area to rally behind the APRC party for more developments. Following the trend set by the previous speaker, Chief Jawo promised that there will be no need for any opposition to the ruling APRC party in the forthcoming polls.

Pierre Bah, chief of Niani, also commended the president for the achievements he has registered in his area, ranging from the construction of the Kuntaur Police Station, to the provision of portable water supply, and electricity. These developments, he said, has put them on the same level as those in urban Gambia, in terms of the social facilities they are enjoying.

Mbemba Fayenteh, who defected from the UDP to the APRC, said that his decision to defect was based on the fact that he had become conscious of the numerous developments that are being registered by President Jammeh, whom he described as an exemplary leader who does not discriminate - either on political or tribal grounds. All the other speakers at the occasion described President Jammeh as an extraordinarily peaceful leader who has been blessed by God.

Alert:Statement by Secretary Clinton on World Press Freedom Day!!!

Clinton reaffirms strong U.S. commitment to media freedom worldwide

(begin text)
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
May 1, 2009
STATEMENT BY SECRETARY CLINTON
World Press Freedom Day
The United States is proud to join the international community in celebrating World Press Freedom Day and the contributions that journalists make to advancing human dignity, liberty, and prosperity.
We live in a world where the free flow of information and ideas is a powerful force for progress. Independent print, broadcast, and online media outlets are more than sources of news and opinion. They also expose abuses of power, fight corruption, challenge assumptions, and provide constructive outlets for new ideas and dissent.
Freedom of the press is protected by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is a hallmark of every free society. Wherever media freedom is in jeopardy, all other human rights are also under threat. A free media is essential to democracy and it fosters transparency and accountability, both of which are prerequisites for sustained economic development.
Those who seek to abuse power and spread corruption view media freedom as a threat. Instead of supporting an open press, they attempt to control or silence independent voices. The methods they use against news organizations and journalists range from restrictive laws and regulations to censorship, violence, imprisonment, and even murder. Such tactics are not new, and cannot go unanswered.
We are especially concerned about the citizens from our own country currently under detention abroad: individuals such as Roxana Saberi in Iran, and Euna Lee and Laura Ling in North Korea.
On behalf of President Obama, I want to affirm the United States' strong commitment to media freedom worldwide. We will champion this cause through our diplomatic efforts and through our exchange and assistance programs. We will work in partnership with non-governmental organizations and directly with members of the media. And we will stand with those courageous men and women who face persecution for exercising and defending the right of media freedom.
